2025 Australian Open Review

A Smash Hit Start to the Tennis Year!

Ah, the Australian Open. where summer sizzles, the tennis dazzles, and this year, animated tennis streams gave us a whole new way to enjoy the game. Let’s break down the highlights from this year’s tournament, a thrilling event with plenty of history, surprises, and (as always) late-night drama.

For those of us in the UK, the time difference meant we missed the day sessions, but waking up to the results of the night sessions made a bleak January that little bit brighter.

Champions Crowned: A Memorable Finish

Men’s Singles Champion: Jannik Sinner 🇮🇹

Jannik Sinner continued his dominance with a stunning run in Melbourne. His victory in the final sees him claim his third grand slam title and remain world number 1. Despite the Italian’s success there is still many who are aggrieved by the doping incident from last year.

Women’s Singles Champion: Madison Keys 🇺🇸

Madison Keys lit up the courts with her powerful game and incredible focus, capturing her first Grand Slam title against the heavy favourite Aryna Sabalenka. Her performances throughout the tournament were as dazzling as the Melbourne sunshine, and the final was a masterclass in big-match composure.

YouTube Animated Stream: A Smash Hit!

Who knew we needed a cartoon version of the Australian Open? The animated stream brought us Wii Tennis nostalgia, complete with hilarious moments like Daniil Medvedev smashing his racket into the net camera in cartoon form. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth a watch!

Djokovic and Murray: The New Dream Duo

In a twist few saw coming, Andy Murray joined Novak Djokovic as a coach, and the results were immediate. Djokovic’s quarterfinal victory over Carlos Alcaraz was a huge success for the pair, showing the tennis world that the two legends are still finding new ways to make their mark.

Late Finishes: A Persistent Problem

Once again, we had matches stretching into the early hours - Medvedev’s defeat to Tien finished at 2:54am local time! This has been going on too long now. The patience of fans and the endurance of players can’t keep being tested like this. When will the scheduling finally change? Let’s hope the organisers take note -the players deserve better!

Danielle Collins’ Crowd Moment

Danielle Collins added a fiery moment to the tournament with her signature “How about that?!”celebration after being booed and heckled by the Aussie crowd. Her post-match interview was equally memorable:

“Every person that’s bought a ticket to come out here and heckle me, it’s all going towards the Danielle Collins fund.”

Love her or not, you’ve got to admire her wit and grit!

Brit Watch: Plenty to Cheer About

It was a historic year for British tennis, with six Brits reaching the second round and three making it to the third round, only the second time this has ever happened.

Jack Draper: Too many five-set battles left him running on fumes in the later rounds. A valiant effort nonetheless.

Katie Boulter: Fought hard but fell in the second round.

Emma Raducanu: Made her first third round but ran into a one-of-a-kind Iga Świątek, who delivered a commanding win.

Cam Norrie: An early exit in round one due to fitness issues - time to get healthy and bounce back.

Jacob Fearnley: Pulled off a shock win against an out-of-sorts Nick Kyrgios and reached the third round. Ultimately, Zverev (the eventual runner-up) proved too strong.

Jodie Burrage: After successive long term injuries ruined her 2024 it was great to see Jodie win her first-round encounter. What was more impressive was her inspired performance against Coco Gauff, where she had the young star on the ropes before falling short.

Harriet Dart: A solid opening-round win but a disappointing round-two exit.

Doubles Delight

Special mention to Henry Patten, who, alongside his Finnish partner Harri Heliövaara, claimed the men’s doubles title. It’s a fantastic achievement for British doubles tennis!

Wheelchair Tennis Dominance

The Brits dominated the wheelchair events yet again:

Alfie Hewett won the men’s singles title and teamed up with Gordon Reid to take home the doubles title - their 22nd Grand Slam title as a pair. Legends of the game!

What’s Next?

The 2025 Australian Open gave us everything we could have hoped for, thrilling matches, historic achievements, and even a few laughs along the way. With Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys leading the charge and plenty of rising stars making their mark, the tennis season is off to an exciting start.

Let’s hope the scheduling improves before next year, (highly doubt it) but for now, bring on the French Open!
